In March, we will return to MATCH for the Houston premiere of D. Patton White’s latest work. As the Shadows Grow Longer explores the themes of memorial, memory, and relationship. D. Patton White first created this piece under the title July 13, 2016:4:10pm, signifying the moment in time that his younger brother passed away. This spring, White will reimagine the piece with the Core Dance Artists, integrating their experiences with loss, as well as the loss we are experiencing on the nation level as a whole.

Keeping Up With Core Dance
September, 2018
Every work of art points somewhere beyond itself; transcends itself and its author; it creates a special force field around itself that moves the human mind and the human nervous system in a way that its author could scarcely have planned ahead of time. It is impossible to number the rays that emanate from it, and no one can see where they end.-Vaclav Havel from Disturbing the Peace
Most of the summer and into September found the artists and staff of Core Dance traveling from coast to coast and across the Atlantic. Dreaming our future into being alongside our community partners and collaborators; our minds, hearts and inspirations grew ever wider. We welcome you within our circle in the days and months to come to experience dance as an essential element of the fabric of our human experience, connecting us to each other.

Summer Travels
Summer Travels
June and July ushered in ground-breaking work in Iceland and Berlin on “if…a memoir”, a new collaborative work joining Christian Meyer (Sound Design), Simon Gentry (Visual Design) and myself. "if... a memoir" is slated for our 40th Anniversary Season in 2019-20. This performance installation and love song for humanity heightens our awareness of and connection to the earth and to each other.
In mid-August, all the Artists of Core Dance convened in Sѐte, France with Germana Civera to deepen the artistic practices as part of Human Landscapes (2.0).

Water About Us Residency
Returning stateside, we are taking a deep dive (literally) into the essence of water. In preparation for our University of Central Arkansas October residency, Water About Us, the artists of Core Dance are working alongside Hearding Cats Collective to create a performance meditation. The Dance Artists, musicians as well as audience members will experience this immersive work from within the UCA HPER pool.

Human Landscapes in Houston
Human Landscapes in Houston
Human Landscapes (2.0) will be unveiled in late October at Houston’s Harrisburg Art Museum. Taking place within a landscape of newly commissioned murals created by Daniel Anguilu, Carlos Severeno and the refugee youth of PAIR – Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees – the Dance Artists of Core Dance, including Patton White and myself, will actualize this performance - a migration of beings, gestures and stories – as an entry point into the immigration crisis.

"I saw an earlier version of this piece last year and it was by far and away the most impactful dance work I have ever experienced. Tearing up and goosebumping now just thinking about it. It has no doubt evolved into an even deeper, even more incredible work of art than it already was - I cannot wait to have my heart broken/awoken by it all over again.”
"The work was deeply moving and followed such a nice narrative/emotional arc. The intention and execution aligned; the dancers were fully present, engaged and engaging. And I loved that the evening culminated in such a beautiful, reverent yet celebratory procession... Thank you for what you created."
"The whole experience felt so thoughtful... considered with deep care for the audience... infused with loving intention. I found the projections especially evocative. The movement motifs developed with real clarity. You harnessed the power and capacity of that ensemble, their unique gifts and personalities. I keep thinking about the structured games, the moments where duos challenge each other playfully, and give each other instructions and suggestions to try again, to get it right. There was something so true and aching about watching the youthful dancers in that material. Exploring and enjoying the body's ability to figure it out. They held confidence and joy and curiosity in their bodies -- all next to the image of the clock, a reminder that every moment continues to pass and slip from us."

Resonating
Core Dance fully embraces the world through the elements of Dance – Body, Energy, Space and Time. When we speak about our work both within our organization and without, the frame of our communication is so readily tied to movement. One aspect of working with the moving body we are keenly aware of is its resonance. When we speak of our work in the public context, we speak of its resonance that continues beyond time or the actual performance. Our recent work with American Playground in Tel Aviv and Civil Twilight in Little Rock, Arkansas continue to resonate for all of us at Core Dance as well as new and long –time collaborators and audiences in both places. We have deep gratitude that our work has us traveling the globe, creating & participating in rich dialogue ignited by dance.
In Creation
While resonance is felt, the present moment reveals itself. As I write this, we are in our 3rd week in the studio with Germana Civera, creating Human Landscapes, taking the resonance of stories, memories and images of the human experience into our bodies, discovering what is inherently human in all of us. Simultaneously, we are putting the finishing touches on our emerging Architecture of the Future: Core Dance 2017-2020, a collaboratively developed plan formed with resonance and wisdom from our past, calling forth continued meaning and impact in our future.
Approaching
Our movement leads us to the close of what for many of us has been a turbulent 2017 and the approach of hope in the new year. Our efforts will be spent to support artists in the act of creation as a “finish” to 2017. Fieldwork will continue to inspire dialogue and community around the creative act while strengthening the intentionality of newly created art in a myriad of genres. In addition, Core Dance will initiate the Dance Laboratory, an opportunity for professional artists of all genres to work with Core Dance resources, including the Dance Artists of Core Dance, to investigate, explore and create without the limitations and pressures of producing a finished work. We will close 2017 with our first Dance Lab artist in residence, mover/singer Polly Motley.
With a grateful heart.
