Constructing Dance:
a play-filled celebration of the Art of Making Dances
Constructing Dance: a play-filled celebration of the Art of Making Dances will take place January 22 through February 8, 2025. Curated, themed evenings from an open, all- inclusive call to the metro-Atlanta dance community will take place at Actor’s Express Theatre on the West Side. Initiated by Core Dance, this project is a partnership with DanceATL and Actor’s Express Theatre.
In Core Dance’s current evolution, we choose to deepen our work as a leading center and laboratory for the creation, development, investigation and dissemination of dance and movement-based forms. In celebration, we offer Constructing Dance as a testament to our past and a lens on our future.

Small Dances
New or adapted works will be performed within a 5'x5' square on the larger stage challenging artists to create a work for a limited space. Pre-marked squares on the stage will be assigned moments prior to the performance through a “chance operation”.
On the Corridor
New or adapted works will be performed within (or in relation to) a "corridor" of space onstage, limiting the performance area to a narrow hallway. A designated corridor of the stage will be assigned moments prior to the performance through a “chance operation”.

Dancing the Score
Dancing The Score is an evening of improvisational performance by an ensemble of individuals creating together and alongside one another as they navigate a predetermined "score" or framework in real time in front of an audience.

Under Construction
Under Construction is an informal sharing of new and "in-process" works, providing opportunities for artists to test out work on an audience, receive feedback, and share their process. These Sunday events will be donation-based attendance with a "pay-what-you-can" ticket fee structure for audiences.

Wrecking the Dance
Existing dance works will be performed then deconstructed or "wrecked" by another dancemaker, then performed again. Taking out the preciousness, allows artists to see their work in a new way by letting someone else take it apart and rebuild it in their own way.
