19th Century (wo)Man: A Contemporary Intervention
National Gallery of Prague
In a time when distance defined our world, Core Dance transformed connection into creation. This cross-cultural virtual residency bridged continents, artists, and histories, proving that collaboration knows no boundaries.
In 2021, under the Artistic Direction of Sue Schroeder, five Czech and six American Dance Makers came together for a five-week virtual creative residency. As the world continued to navigate the lasting effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic, this residency stood as a testament to Core Dance’s resiliency and capacity for innovation.
Drawing inspiration from the permanent exhibition 1796–1918: Art of the Long Century at the National Gallery of Prague, the participating artists collectively explored how movement could offer a new lens into art history. Their collaboration sought to create a kinesthetic dialogue with the visual art of the past, merging dance, research, and interpretation to reimagine traditional artistic narratives.
The resulting work, 19th Century (wo)Man: A Contemporary Intervention, premiered at the National Gallery of Prague in October 2021 and was later made available for international virtual viewing. Through this project, Core Dance reaffirmed its commitment to fostering creative exchange across cultures and disciplines, even amidst unprecedented global challenges.
