above and below

Born from the luminous world of Dan Flavin’s installation at The Menil Collection, “above and below” transforms space into a living sculpture of motion and light.

Originally created for Dan Flavin’s visual art installation in Richmond Hall at The Menil Collection in Houston, above and below is a site-specific dance work that explores the intersection of movement, light, and space.Flavin’s immersive use of light and color inspired a vibrant environment for this kinetic response. The dancers’ movements engaged directly with the lines of ultraviolet lamps and patterns of fluorescent tubes, transforming the hall into a living dialogue between visual and performing art.Choreographer Sue Schroeder reflected on the connection between the two artists’ approaches:“Flavin worked as a sculptor in space, and that is often how I pursue my choreography — visual art in space with the body as the medium.”above and below was later reimagined for Flux Nights in Castleberry Hill with Flux Projects. This second site-specific iteration unfolded in an open parking lot, illuminated not by gallery lights but by the headlights of the audience’s cars, creating an intimate and unexpected interplay of light and motion.
