Living Mural: Diego Rivera

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

In partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Core Dance transformed galleries into spaces of motion and imagination, creating performances that blurred the lines between dance and visual art.

In 1997, Core Dance made its debut at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). This first collaboration marked the beginning of Artistic Director Sue Schroeder’s ongoing exploration of performance within museum environments. It reflected Core’s deep commitment to activating visual art spaces through movement.

Two years later, in 1999, Core returned to the MFAH to create an interactive living mural in response to the museum’s Diego Rivera exhibition.

Rivera, the renowned Mexican painter, muralist, and revolutionary, is celebrated for his monumental frescoes that brought art into public life. Interestingly, the MFAH exhibition featured Rivera’s non-mural works, offering a fresh context for his artistic voice.

To honor Rivera’s legacy, Core Dance transformed the gallery into a living mural, filling a towering scaffolding installation with movement, rhythm, and presence. Dancers became brushstrokes in motion, a dynamic tribute to Rivera’s art, spirit, and vision.
